I don't know what exactly is fixed in upstream, but I think it's more complicated (and it's not pulled in Dapper. Do we want to do that?)

%s does NOT pass the emailaddress, it passes "mailto:name at domain.com". 
So "mozilla-thunderbird mailto:%s" expands in mailto:mailto:name at domain.com, and thunderbird only strips the first mailto: instance. 

There are a lot of similar bugs, it's confusing me. I will close them all and open a new one, to make things less confusing for the one who will fix this. If it *is* fixed in upstream, then that new bug can be closed. 

(try for example custom command: xterm -e 'echo %s && sleep 10'
