The behaviour it's the same as in kde, and windows. I've tried tio explain it but after one month you don't even consider possible a feature which is working for the rest of the world for years. It took one sec to try it on kde.
If you type fast it matches more letter, if it's slow enough or the key is held down, it cycles.
The current behaviour is simply an incomplete implementation of the proposed behaviour.
