Nope, I don't think that's the problem because I've already tried waiting and it doesn't change. Besides what you describe should also manifest when I tell the panel to reload the applet after I do a 'kill $deskbars_pid'.

I should also add that if I hover the mouse pointer over that gray area it changes to the text entry cursor but any clicks on the area doesn't do nothing. Weirder perharps, is that sometimes the deskbar loads just fine and nothing of this happens.

I'm adding the deskbar's upstream main author. Hope he doesn't mind.
