I believe gThumb to be quite good after tailoring to my needs. I use it mainly because I can see a full sized version of an image, useful for culling dirs full of photos, and for seeing their exif data.

I would support a more intuitive interface, better default settings, and yes nautilus should be able to show full sized previews.
