These are the original tango folder with different colors and some tweaking here and there, which are not imported pngs, but pure svgs. Believe me we care about shadows a lot and had a lot of discussions on the topic, but the current solution is actually the best possible for the tools we use at the moment, Jakub is experimenting with cvs inkscape which is starting to support the mask feature, but it is not that usable atm. I personally don't consider your solution any better than the current one.
Jakub usually hangs on #tango on freenode if you want his opinion.
