Could you modify the file "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/deskbar/ui/cuemiac/Cuemiac.py" and put just above line 40 (which reads return {"msg" : "<i>%s</i>" % (self.__nest_msg(n) % ("<b>%d</b>" % n))}) the following line (with enough tabs, not spaces,  to indent it properly)

print self.__nest_msg(n)

This will help to see what's wrong.. i don't see in the source code anything wrong..
