Im am using fr_CA.UTF-8 and I have the same behaviour.
(I installed dapper by installing breezy server, then dist-upgrade then install ubuntu-desktop.)

it looks like but it is NOT http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=336174

The name "Linux" is shown but it does log in the right user after n seconds.
