I agree. This technique seems to be the subject of several
specifications, notably easy-codec-installation, and I've added it to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/CommonInstallHook

It's also a bug in other browsers, so for a start I'm opening a task on
firefox.
