Thank you for your bug. Could you install libglib2.0-0-dbg libgnomevfs2-0-dbg nautilus-dbg gnome-panel-dbg and get a backtrace (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace) of the hang?
On my desktop with some random non-existant name after some seconds a 'can't find the host' dialog is displayed and neither nautilus nor gnome-panel is freezing
