John,  Please see Note 3 in my original entry.

Dave,  On a hunch, I started with installing the debug package for GDM.
The only line I see of importance in the messages log is:

Dec 22 17:54:53 localhost kernel: [17179860.188000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt
0000:01:00.0[A] -> Link [LNKA] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11
