While I was at this I also found a second crasher. I uploaded workarounds in 

 gthumb (3:2.7.2-0ubuntu3) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * Add debian/patches/05_gth_browser_NULL_paths.dpatch to fix two crashers in
     src/gth-browser.c, go_to_directory_continue():
     - If dir_list->path is NULL at program startup, set it to get_home_uri()
       to have a reasonable default.
     - Check for NULL dir_list->try_path in the result code check (sometimes
       happens on photo import from camera).

However, you (and/or upstream) should review them, particularly the -> path change is pretty hideous. Therefore I leave the bug open and reassign it back to Daniel.

At least I can now finally import photos from my camera :)
