Thanks for your bug. That works fine for me (sftp). Could you get a backtrace.
Run gedit, get the hang, then from a command line:
- gdb -p $(pidof gedit)
(gdb) thread apply all bt

What kind of vfs share do you use (ftp, smb, sftp)? Do you open them from nautilus or from the gedit fileselector?
