Well, I'll be.

I've ticked every entry in Conf. Manager->/system/storage, and rebooted
the machine since I did so.  Everything is working absolutely flawlessly
now.

I think this can be re-classified from "this doesn't work" to "the
default gconf settings don't make sense".
