Aha.

Ok, I understand what happened.  Basically too much manual intervention.
I'm coming from a debian system where that was necessary.

I had added the /ipod to /etc/fstab (this caused the dual entries).
Also, I had copied over a rule from for udevd like this: #BUS="scsi",
SYSFS{model}="iPod*", NAME="ipod"

Removing both of these results in a very slick system that detects the
ipod being added and removed and maps it to /media/ipod.  Very cool!
