Right, I agree with you that the settings in /etc should not be honoured
in this respect - I installed ubuntu probably 18 months ago, and had a
totally different monitor then, I basically just expected that the
setting in the gnome control centre would 'just work' without having to
resort to a terminal to reconfigure some other package.
