I looked at all the available gst 0.10 packages, and came spotted one called "
gstreamer0.10-x" : "X video sink plug-in for gstreamer".

I installed it, that changed things. It still doesn't work, but now exhibits the
same bug I filed the other day : http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=21145

The difference though, sadly, is that even when I select "no Xv" (or "SDL") as
video output in gstreamer-properties, it still won't work.
