OK, some more info.
I found that it will play video streams with no associated audio (i.e. an m2v);
so I've found if I switch that gstreamer-properties to anything other than ESD
totem now plays anything.  So I'm not sure if my problem is esd related
or the way totem talks to it - is there a good esd test?
