Sorry about the late reply.

This problem doesn't exist on dapper, but I can't upgrade to dapper on the
machine in question as it belongs to my parents (I don't want them running dapper).

I've tried

dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-`uname -r`

which doesn't help :-(

Don't really know what else to tell you guys...
