I got tired of gam_server eating up all CPU cycles, so I did this:   
   
sudo mv /usr/lib/gamin/gam_server /usr/lib/gamin/gam_server-disable && killall gam_server 
 
In .xsession-errors I get a few messages complaining about FAM not running, and that we're falling back to polling.  I'm fine 
with that, as polling seems to have far less affect on my system than gamin (CPU is on 0% while writing this, while having 
several large NFS folders open).
