OK, I nailed it :-)

I was missing the librsvg2-common which contains these shared objects:

/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libsvg.so
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/loaders/svg_loader.so

I usually run debfoster and that package must have been purged one of
these days. Maybe libsrvg2-2 or some of the gtk+2.0 packages should
depend on it?
