Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28527

Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
(current dapper)

System -> log out

hover over the "sleep" icon and you'll see "Let the computer enter a
sleeping state. You can wake it up by pressing any key." I chose sleep,
waited until the computer looked like it was sleeping and pressed a key.
Nothing happened. I tried a few times with different keys, still no
result. Pressing the power button did work and restored my system to its
previous state.

So either the text is wrong, or my computer is wrong.

The keyboard is not an USB keyboard, but a normal (PS/2 I believe it is
called?) keyboard
