Thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu and gnome-media and
gstreamer do you use? Did you try changing the settings of the displayed
mixers in Volume control and modifying some of the others? To me this
sounds like a duplicate of bug 27716 - could you check, if this
describes all your symtoms?
