Sebastien, we don't detect when gaim is being started automatically, vrs
manually.  is it possible the WM or session manager is resizing us?

Jimmy, before quitting with gaim running (to be started automatically when you next log in), please grep the ~/.gaim/prefs.xml for 
<pref name='width' type='int' value='232'/>
<pref name='height' type='int' value='948'/>
your values will differ from mine.
