Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gdm
It seems like gdm can lose some settings when it's been upgraded to a new version. In particular, I had gdm set up to login automatically as a certain user. The system was upgraded to Dapper from Breezy, and when it was rebooted, the login screen came up instead of my desktop. This has actually happened before, but I'm not quite sure if it was during the upgrade from Hoary to Breezy or if it was a regular package upgrade.
I also have to note that this happened on my parents' system, and I use Kubuntu on my own system, so I cannot provide you with much additional information.
** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu)
Importance: Untriaged
Status: Unconfirmed
