I'm not terribly competent with the patches so I couldn't get the patch
to  (even with different -p options). Nevertheless I applied it manually
and everything works ok (this is with 0.5). I created a diff that
applies OK to a clean source and I'm attaching it here, although frankly
I fail to see how it is any different from the original patch. It solves
the problem for me with 0.5. Thanks to everybody that took a look into
this!
