In breezy, kpilot, jpilot worked AOK. I upgraded to dapper & Major sync
problems with my Zire 31. Very vary occasional syncs succeed most just
hang with no output error and eventually time out. Going back to my
breezy install sync works great again. Tries the same with

pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB1 -l

same as with kpilot & jpilot. So its not the apps, its pilot-xfer or
below and there don't seem a lot of dependencies.

Thought I would just chip in - One this one is sorted I am diving into
dapper 100% :)
