I have this too - seb128, I don't know what you mean by a 'custom
~/.gnome2/session' I just have one that was generated by the save
session feature of gnome 2.12.

I get it about 50% of the time if I logout of GNOME, then log back in
immediately, in this situation, there is a gnome-panel running (it never
quit when I logged out of my first login). In fact when it does happen I
have lots of processes left over from the previous login - bonobo-
activation-server, gnome-panel, gnome-vfs-daemon, mixer_applet2 and esd.
