ok, some interesting stuff.  After leaving the machine idle, the
screensaver kicked on.  The screensaver default was "Random".  It was on
the Tetrahedron screensaver when I wiggled the mouse to wake it up.  It
didn't.  Then it hung and finally displayed a message box that the
"shell had failed to respond 6 times in the past x minutes" and to click
OK to drop to the command console.  I did.  Then I tried to run "sudo
apt-get dist-upgrade" and it said "dpkg is corrupted, run dpkg
--configure -a to repair".  I did, then restarted the machine and ran
"sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" and it went through downloads and updates
for about 30 minutes.  I then restarted and the shell and waste basket
appear fine now.  Weird.
