Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/34445

Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
When selecting log out from the log out dialog, your session will begin to end. Between the time in which you press logout, many things happen. Your panel disappears, window frames appear and disappear, the background flickers, and then finally, gdm is started again. These visual events are undesirable.
Here's an idea to resolve that: GNOME can use the xgamma hack to fade the screen to black. This will hide all of the flickering and window popping from the user. Then, GDM can use the xgamma hack to fade back in. This will make the entire logging in and out process seem much more smooth and polished.
