[Bug 12040] Gnome menu is slow when clicking for the first time

This problem is still alive and kicking in Dapper with the latest
updates (gnome-panel_2.13.91-0ubuntu6_i386.deb). The first time the
'foot' menu is opened it takes several seconds to appear. Meanwhile the
panel or the menu applet has grabbed the X server so I can not do
anything else but wait for the menu to appear. Irritating to say the
least.
