After testing a Flight 5 live cd (i386), simply lowering the -as
parameter in /etc/esound/esd.conf will alleviate the symptom of the
device being blocked when esd is used. Just checking the default Ubuntu
gstreamer-properties configuration reveals that the default audio sink
is set to "autodetect".

Without dropping esd support completely, the culprit actually seems to
be that default_options is not set in /etc/esound/esd.conf. Try changing
default_options to "-terminate -nobeeps -as 2" (spawn_options doesn't
need to be set then according to the semantics quoted by
default_options).
