that patch isn't correct, no.  (at least, it's incorrect in that it's
entirely inconsistent with all the other layouts.)

so this was confusing me too a while ago; it seems to be purely a UI issue with the gnome-kb-switcher, in that it needs a better way to express variants.  maybe instead of:
> root layout
expanding to:
\/ root layout
      first variant
      second variant
      third variant
we could have:
> root layout
expanding to:
\/ root layout
      (default)
      first variant
      second variant
      third variant

that would be my guess.  saves modifying all the layouts, at least ...
