I can confirm this issue on my Thinkpad T43.

Battery detected by acpi (/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state = present) if I
plug it while in suspend mode but Gnome Power Manager does not show.

If I plug the battery before suspend to ram and unplug it while asleep,
/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state still reports the battery as present.
