The uesr is using totem-xine (which is not the default Ubuntu backend for totem).

Lukas:
To play xvid videos in xine programs you have to install the libxine-extracodecs as it is an mpeg4 based codec. I suspect you are making a good case for dvdrip to rip to ogg by default.
