could you log in on a text terminal and run
date
to check that the date is sane. gnome wont start if the date is before 1970, see https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/23426

also could you try choosing options -> session -> failsafe terminal at
the gdm screen. then running gnome-session in the terminal. this may
reveal some useful error messages.
