That's probably a duplicate of some other bug. Nautilus could do a
"transparent" editing by copying the file on the local system that from
here you would break the coherence between systems if the distant
location change by example. I agree that the situation is not optimal
but that's not something we will change from a distribution perspective.
Maybe it should be discussed on the nautilus upstream mailing list
