I dont have the cpu spike bug, so its probably unrelated.

Yes stopping hal actually elminates the disk activity that happens every second.

While it solves the constant disk activity there's still disk activity  at random times when the computer is idle.

Pretty much we eliminated cups errors, xsession errors, and hal.
