Thank you Daniel,
I'll check bug #34818.
I am afraid changing device 'surround51' to 'plug:surround51' does not solve anything: xine was already using 'plug:surround51' and now I invoke mplayer with 'plug:surround51' and still both applications cause alsa to output, continuously,  'ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:802:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave' to '.xsession-errors'

I hope somebody else takes over this bug and finds a solution :-(.
