Public bug reported:

Affects: meta-gnome2 (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Binary package hint: gnome

Dapper Beta 2 LiveCD:

After booting and loading the CD, X and Gnome starts up. The Screen resolution was set to the maximum amount listed in xorg.conf for my monitor
Samsung Syncmaster S/M 1100p+ 21" (on a GeForce 6200 256MB).

Since this ugly screen resolution runs only with flickering 60Hz, i've
tried to switch the resolution with the gnome-display-properties to a
more moderate lower size.

After setting the size f.e. to 1280x1024, the gnome-setting-panel and
gnome ends, X starting up again and the gdm appears. But this time in
the same high size as before. So nothing changes.

I've tested this behaviour also with an breezy 5.10-LiveCD on the same
system and there the resolution switiching works fine. After changing
the screen size, you get an dialoge with the question if you like the
new settings and it's NOT necessary to restart X or gnome.

But with Dapper Beta2, this seems broken.
