FWIW, the crash in the very first comment is probably due to gstreamer0.10-pitfdll

(not entirely suprising either, s I personally found pitfdll - at least the 0.10 version, never tried the 0.8 version - highly unstable and I've seen lots of crack code in there too. I recommend uninstalling it).
