Same problem also appeared after update on friday. Also hitting restart
takes me to the splash screen but pc then hangs.

'sudo shutdown -h now'  will shut the machine down. One thread
(/ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=175384) said to install gnome power
manager. But synaptic tells me it was unable to find this. So I havent
been able to test this.
