I've had the same problem, but after installing gnome-power-manager (because of this bug: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source /gnome-panel/+bug/44514 ) I've got an hibernate button again. -- System->Logout no longer shows hibernate/sleep https://launchpad.net/bugs/44758
