I just tested with Gstreamer-0.8 and it works just fine (there is no
'audiotestsrc' element, so I used an mp3 file):

$ gst-launch-0.8 filesrc location=smash.mp3 ! mad ! alsasink
RUNNING pipeline ...

and with 0.10...

$ gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location=smash.mp3 ! mad ! alsasink
Setting pipeline to PAUSED ...
Pipeline is PREROLLING ...
ERROR: from element /pipeline0/alsasink0: Could not get/set settings from/on resource.
Additional debug info:
