[Bug 45160] icons in the notification area look too much like launcher icons in the panel

I help have setup and help many first time linux users and i have choosen gnome and ubuntu for them because i think it is a great desktop.  users constantly mistake the gaim notification area icon for the launcher icon.  

Can we make icons in the notification area look different so users can
easily tell what is a launcher and what is not by looking at them?
