The old style were grey/white ; now they're yellow/orange and smaller
text.

I don't know the right way  to see when xchat-gnome was updated, but

 ls /var/cache/apt/archives/xchat-gnome* -al
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 511440 2006-05-15 21:08 /var/cache/apt/archives/xchat-gnome_0.11-0ubuntu5_i386.deb

Would suggest it was updated in the last week?

Please also note my comment about the user list - surely that is not
related to notification daemon.
