The patch has that case:

"case 0x14f51cd8: /* version */
        return PACKAGE_VERSION;"

where the code uses VERSION. Guillaume do you know if using
"PACKAGE_VERSION" is correct? I've let the new code path as it is but
maybe changing VERSION by PACKAGE_VERSION requires some other code
changes too?

This upload fixes the issue:

 xchat-gnome (0.11-0ubuntu6) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * debian/patches/13_fix_crasher_with_no_session_started.patch:
     - patch from upstream, fix crasher when no session is started
       (Ubuntu: #45235)
