I just found the following in the ChanegLog of xf86-video-ati-
X11R7.1-6.6.0 (the ati driver tar ball of the latest x11r7.1 release:

This sound pretty much like it could be the fix to the problem we
experience, doesn't it? Any chances of applying this patch?
