I have the same contition but I tracked it down to the nautilus part of
the thumbnailer because if I set
/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_image_thumbnails to never then this does
not happen, but if I turn it on and turn off all
/desktop/gnome/thumbnailers then it still happens.

I'm on G3 powerpc, I have Dapper with nautilus 2.14.1-0ubuntu9. I have
xfs partition.
