i have just seen that this bug is already known as https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/35229 scaling down /usr/share/totem/totem_logo.png to e.g. 640x512 works for me. -- cannot start totem https://launchpad.net/bugs/47653
