Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: abiword-gnome

There are a few ways to insert a greek character.
The first method Insert -> Symbol -> Select "Greek and Coptic" unicode block, click the capital delta -- the letter inserted is the degree symbol.
The "Character Details" portion is pasted below:
Δ
U+0394 GREEK CAPITAL LETTER DELTA
Unicode category: Letter, Uppercase
Various Useful Representations
UTF-8: 0xCE 0x94
UTF-16: 0x0394
C octal escaped UTF-8: \316\224
XML decimal entity: Δ

Copying the symbol from OO.writer produces the same effect.

It is possible to correctly insert a Delta however, if instead of
selecting "Greek and Coptic" you leave "Unicode Block" set to "All" and
double-click D, a capital delta will be inserted.

This bug does NOT seem to affect the abiword package, just the abiword-
gnome package.

** Affects: abiword (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed
